John A. Swain
Mr. Swain is an associate professor of law at the University of Arizona, Rogers College of Law. Professor Swain is co-author of the book, Streamlined Sales and Use Tax (with Walter Hellerstein), and author of the cumulative supplement of volume II of the leading state and local tax law treatise, Hellerstein & Hellerstein, State Taxation (Warren Gorham Lamont 3rd ed. 1998) (updated three times a year). He is a regular columnist for State Tax Notes magazine and has written numerous articles on state taxation published in the National Tax Journal, Journal of Taxation, Southern California Law Review, Boston University Law Review, William & Mary Law Review, Georgia Law Review, Tulane Law Review, Utah Law Review, and other journals. He is a frequent speaker at state and local tax conferences and has consulted with state governments and other entities on matters of state tax law and policy. Before entering academia, Professor Swain was a partner with the Phoenix-based law firm, Streich Lang (now Quarles & Brady), where he practiced exclusively in the area of state and local taxation. Professor Swain received his A.B. from Dartmouth College and his J.D. from Yale Law School. He is a member of the Arizona Bar.
